I have a theory...

...that Andrew keeps threatening to post if I don't do so soon. I was wondering one afternoon why talentless singers and musicians consider to have record-breaking album sales. It occured to me just then that maybe the reason talentless people have careers is talentless laypeople like to listen to them. It makes people feel good to think that they are capable of one day having glamorous, rock star-like careers, and the only reason they don't have them is they choose not to. It's what the American Idol phenomenon is all about: making real people into stars. People love to see themselves on TV and hear themselves on the radio. Why does Britney Spears have a singing career? Because tons of teenage girls sound like she does on stage when they sing in the shower and wish they looked like her in the nonclothes she wears. Why does Creed continue to have number one singles? Because - despite the fact that their people release only the same two musical tracks on the radio and only change the lyrics each time - most men sound like Scott Stabb when they first wake up in the morning, and that makes his voice intriguing.

Regular people like to think celebrities are regular people, too, so badness prospers.
