Here's the dealio:
* The District wants to have day care facilities for the children of student mothers at our high school. The purpose of this is to reduce The District's dropout rate.
* Therefore, The District is putting pressure on us teachers to make lesson plans "more engaging (read "more entertaining)," treat our students like we would treat guests in our home (I LOVE that one), and call parents BEFORE we give detentions to their kids (because holding students accountable for their own actions is no longer a part of an educator's job description).
*Meanwhile, back at the ranch, our state championship winning football team is getting all new facilities (locker room, playing field, etc., etc.). Yippee!
*Meanwhile, back at the other ranch, two debate students are going to nationals, and the first thing out of a certain administrator's mouth was, "Are we gonna have to pay?"
*Here's the bottom line: The idea behind getting more money to build a day care facility is so that we keep kids in school, right? Well, if the money we get somehow miraculously ends up being used in places other than it was intended to be used, then don't academics still go down the toilet?
*HOW ARE OUR STUDENTS SUPPOSED TO TAKE TEACHERS, ACADEMICS, OR THEMSELVES SERIOUSLY IF WE KEEP SENDING THEM MIXED MESSAGES?

oh the things i wish to say about my placement...but dare not online...
*sigh* I've even had doubts that teaching, at least in a public high school, is the thing for me...little late to change my mind...
Anna, you'll be fine. You've got a calling and a tough skin. That's an unbeatable combination.
