In the past week, we've all four been varying degrees of sick, our heater's gone out (and been repaired, thankfully), and just this morning, I noticed the airbag light in the minivan is on - which may mean nothing but is unsettling nonetheless and will likely require pricey servicing. Just as I thought it might be time to give in to despair, I remembered the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and the fiery furnace. I read it again just now, and I love the part of the story when they say to King Nebuchadnezzar, "we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up (Daniel 3:16-18)."
How audacious is that? And how confident must they have been in God's power? Their response seems so strongly worded to me that I cannot imagine they uttered them with trembling lip and sweating brow. To me, I take these three at their word when they say that even if God does not rescue them, they will not serve the king's gods. It gives me goosebumps just imagining this kind of showdown. And I love their faith even more than the fact that God did choose to rescue them.
So I figure God is able to provide for any unexpected need we might have - financially or otherwise. But even if He does not, He does not cease to be the God of the universe.
